Happy Valentine’s Day 2016

Hand-dipped Chocolate Strawberries
A Heart-Healthy Treat for You!

It’s Valentines Day! Share some LOVE with a healthy treat! This treat is easy AND so delicious you’ll satisfy that desire for a little indulgence. On the annual day set aside to celebrate love, we should for sure include a special treat, right? We think so! That’s why we’re suggesting a chocolate-covered strawberry Valentine’s treat. One you make at home! It’s GSH approved!

Pick Up Some Organic Strawberries

They MUST be organic!  Strawberries are one of the fleshy variety fruits most susceptible to absorbing toxins from chemicals and pesticides used during the growth process. You precious body doesn’t need or want those toxic substances, so don’t compromise – GO ORGANIC!  I found ours at HEB in Austin and they’re wonderful. Big, juicy, firm and sweet! Great for dipping.

Wash them thoroughly {I use the window-dilution of organic Basic H2 … 1 drop Basic H to 16 ozs water} and rinse off in a colander. Next, dry with paper towels and organize by size on a clean dish towel.

Prepare for Dipping

This is the fun part! Can be messy, but you’ll reduce the clean up if you think strategically!  I suggest you line large cookie sheets with wax paper to hold the dipped strawberries while they set. I put the plain chocolate strawberries on one sheet and those I plan to sprinkle with decorative sugar or chocolate sprinkles I place on a separate sheet.

Select Your Chocolate Chips

You can choose whatever chocolate you like for your dipping. It’s personal taste. The two pictured above happen to be semi-sweet and dark chocolate but I also use white chocolate and milk chocolate. HEB has ORGANIC semi-sweet, so a natural choice! Then pour choc chips into a small bowl and microwave until melted.

I find it makes it easier to dip strawberries so they’re fully covered if I transfer the melted chocolate into a small deep container {a wine glass works great}. That way it’s deep and narrow and makes dipping easy.  Having an ice pick handy is helpful. I stick it into the strawberry through the center of the hull and it makes it less messy and easy to transfer on to the wax paper.

Dip a few at a time with the different chocolate. Sprinkle with the sugar crystals, chocolate sprinkles, or decorate in any manner you choose. Allow to set {I like to leave at room temperature to maximize the flavor of the strawberries, but sometimes, you need to refrigerate to help chocolate set up.

These are the assortment I served last night for our Project HeartSmart Party.  There was something to suit everyone’s taste!

Dark Chocolate Strawberries are a Healthy Choice

Strawberries are a great choice because they’re low in calories, low in carbs, contain both soluble and insoluble fiber and score low on the glycemic index. They’re an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese, and also contain folate (B9), potassium and are very rich in antioxidants and plant compounds, and may have benefits for heart health and blood sugar control!

Dark chocolate adds that little touch of decadence and crunch to the juicy sweetness of the strawberry …. and still keeps it healthy. Dark chocolate is made from the seed of the cocoa tree which is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet. Studies show that dark chocolate can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease.

Now it’s your turn to make some beautiful
hand-dipped chocolate-covered organic strawberries!
